Basically... I'm on my gap year, and a few friends and I plan to go to America in 2009 and drive from the East coast to the West coast. As we are all under 21, it makes the most sense (and most fun) to buy a van on one side, drive to the other side then sell it. Renting is probably really expensive. I have found somewhere that we can buy from, and they say they can find somewhere we can sell to on the other side. My question is, do I need to pay road tax for a car in the United States in the same way I do in England? Also, is it necessary to have insurance? I presume it is. I have looked at AAA (American Automobile Association) which seems to cover both insurance and breakdown services. Does anyone have any other/better suggestions for this? A further complication is that we won't ever really be in one place at any one time, so won't have a mailing address whilst we're there. Thanks!!

So I was in an accident last week. It was a minor fender bender and was my first accident in the 9 years of driving I've had. My husband and I both have our own vehicles but have just purchased an old Land Rover for towing our trailer tent. We have been searching insurance companies online for a cheap quote but have been getting quotes for 1000+. We only want to use the vehicle occasionally & think this is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for insurance, (especially as the vehicle only cost us 600 to buy.) Can anyone recommend a company that provides insurance at a reasonable price for an occassional-use vehicle? Thank you

I want to know from someone who has Geiko car insurance if they like it. I currently have Nationwide, and though I love them, I can get car insurance from Geiko for $40 cheaper a month. Can you cancel car insurance?

Right, I'm getting a car this weekend, I haven't passed my test yet but hopefully will be passed in the next 1 - 2 months, therefore the insurance I'm taking out at the moment is for a provisional driver. The insurance that I'm taking out lasts for a year but obviously I will need to change it when I have passed, so that insurance will rise in price. But I was wondering if once I have passed can I cancel that insurance and change to an insurance that looks at young drivers because at the minute the young driver insurance places won't quote me coz I'm still learning. so I have a little situation with my car insurance company, so heres the deal, I bought a car a wild ago, it was on my brothers name and I was cosigner, we had an nsurance and everything, but then it broke, I couldnt drive it, so we canceled insurance, why pay if it doesnt drive? then I refinanced it and transferred on my name, I didnt tell the bank that the car is broken, but they wanted me to show them proof of insurance, which I went out and bought, because Im going to trade this car in and get new one, and I have no problem paying for new car, but now insurance company wants me to send them a proof of previous insurance. what should I tell them, so my premium wouldnt go up? should I tell them that I just purchased the car? because technicly It went on my name recently.
